Nursing students travel to Chogoria to give and receive

On the eastern coast of Africa there is a small village known as Chogoria, located just below Mt. Kenya. This February and early March a handful of Jamestown College students had the time of their lives there.

National Guard prepared to jump into action for country

The National Guard soldier has a history of being available to respond to emergencies when the need arises. The National Guard developed first as state militias in 1636 as America’s first military force. The National Guard has a unique characteristic unlike any other presence in the United States’ armed forces of being able to assist the states in times of need.

Easter break blues got you down?

For many students, the chance of traveling home every break is rather hard and expensive. While some get to see their mother and father, others get to see the campus abandoned. The town of Jamestown is just coming out of hibernation for students to enjoy. With a few easy tips, this could be the best break yet.

First of all, sleep. Most students run themselves down from all the school work. It’s a good time to recharge the body. It’s also a good time to spend time with others stuck here over break.

What to Wear, What Not to Wear? That is the question.

It’s the biggest day of your professional life, the interview for your dream job. You know that if you get this job all the hard work you have done will pay off. You may have all the skills, talent and the diploma, but what about what you are wearing? Don’t let appearance undermine your great qualities and put a damper on your chances of your dream job.

Unruh Sheldon Center gives students education with quality

Anyone who has ever taken a class in the Unruh Sheldon building knows it is nice. It should be, considering $4.5 million went into its construction and facilities.

The Unruh Sheldon Center for Business and Computer Science was first opened in the fall of 2006, making it Jamestown College’s second-newest building. Although students will usually take several generals there, the building is designed for computer science, information technology, management information science, business, accounting and economics majors.

Sexting: A virtual plague?

A new craze has arrived, and its name is sexting. In a discussion I had with my grandma over spring break, she said, “All the kiddies are doing it now.”

Don’t be fooled. Although sexting is mostly common among teenagers, it has hit the older demographic. Records have shown that people ages 55 and up have joined in on the sexting craze. In an article from AARP.org, a 59-year-old Massachusetts resident said, “Thanks to my cell phone and a slew of sassy ladies, my love life is more interesting than ever.”

How effective are contraceptive methods?

Getting pregnant or an STD is a risk anyone takes when having sex. There are methods to prevent both. However, some are more effective than others, and some have unwanted side effects. Here is a look at what works and what doesn’t.

There is only one contraceptive method that works 100 percent all of the time. Abstinence, or not having sex, is the only way to guarantee that pregnancy will not occur. It is also the only guard against sexually transmitted diseases that works every time. Keeping it in your pants will keep it out of your belly.

The JC Sex Survey

Don’t say the s-word too loud. It’s not something many people like to talk about, but sex is a part of natural life as well as college life. The Collegian surveyed 55 students about sex. Twenty-three participants were males, 29 were female, and three wished not to disclose their gender. Here is what these individuals had to say about the sex life of Jamestown College.

Crime victim awarness and prevention

Most people are familiar with the song “Every Breath You Take” sung by various artists such as The Police and Sting. Who would have thought that such a song could be describing a stalker? The lyrics go something like this: “Every breath you take…every step you take, I’ll be watching you.”

This is most likely not the goal of the song by any means, but it is just an example and a reminder that sexual predators, stalkers and awful things of that nature are out there.

Jimmie women's basketball wins first-ever conference championship

Jamestown College won its first-ever women’s Dakota Athletic Conference tournament championship Tuesday in Black Hills.

“You always hope to win and experience it in front of your home crowd,” head coach Mark Wiest said. “But for us to beat them on their home court for a championship was the ultimate high.”
